Phrasal Verbs
Phrasal Verb is a verb that is combined with one or more participles to create a new meaning that is often quite different from the original verbs.
Structure
Verb + preposition
Eg: Look after (Take care of)
Verb + Adverb
E.g: Give up (stop trying)
Verb + Adverb + Preposition
E.g. Put up with (to tolerate)
Examples
Turn on: Please turn on the light = Switch on
Run into: I ran into an old friend yesterday = meet unexpectedly
Break down: My car broke down on the way = stop working.
Take off: The plane took off at 6.00 pm = leave the ground.
Here are a few phrasal verbs:
1. Account for = Explain
2. Make out = understand
3. Make up = Invent
4. Move on = Continue
5. Act up = Misbehave
