 OET  Listening - Disease Conditions - 01


For OET Listening practices, the most commonly tested disease conditions are: 

Diabetes mellitus (DM):

Symptoms: Polyuria, fatigue, blurred vision.

Medications: Insulin, Metformin, oral hypoglycaemics


Hypertension:

Symptoms: Often asymptomatic, headaches, dizziness

Medications:  ACE inhalers, Beta-blockers, diuretics.


Asthma:

Symptoms: Wheezing, chest tightness, nocturnal cough.

Medications: Bronchodialators (Salbutamol), inhaled corticosteroids

 

Pneumonia (Respiratory disease)

Symptoms: Fever, cough, chest pain.

Medications: Antibiotics (Amoxicillin,  Azithromycin) 


Myocardial infraction(Heart attack)

Symptoms: Chest pain radiating to arm/jaw, sweating

Medications: Aspirin, statins, beta-blockers, nitrates 


Stroke:

Symptoms: Sudden weakness, speech difficulty

Medications: Antiplatelets (Aspirin, Clopidogrel), anticoagulants


Common Medication Vocabulary

Pain relief:  Paracetamol, Ibuprofen, Morphine.

Antibiotics: Amoxicillin, Penicillin, Azithromycin

Cardiac drugs: Aspirin, Statins, ACE inhibitors

Respiratory drugs: Salbutamol, Prednisolone

Endocrine drugs: Insuline, Metformin

Psychiatric drugs: Fluoxetine, Diazepam
