Setting: Hospital Ward
Dietitian :
You are seeing a patient who will be discharged tomorrow after the treatment for typhoid. He is weak and is not sure what to eat at home. He requires dietary advice.
TASK
* Confirm the reason for the visit
* Find out the patient's appetite, digestion and current eating preferences.
* Reassure the patient's weakness and poor appetite are common after typhoid.
* Give dietary advice. Recommend easily digestible foods (e.g., porridge, soups, boiled potatoes, yogurt, rice, stewed nuts, etc.). Encourage high calorie , high protein foods in small quantities (e.g., eggs, lean chicken/fish, milk, etc.) , Stress plenty of fluids.
* Explain foods to avoid: (e.g., very spicy, oily, or fried foods etc.) Avoid raw vegetables, and unhealthy water, etc.)
* reassure that the restricted diet is temporary (2-3 wks)
