Setting: Hospital Ward
DIETITIAN
You are seeing a 52-year-old patient who underwent abdominal surgery (hernia repair) recently and is being discharged tomorrow. He/she is worried about eating after going home and requires dietary advice.
TASK
* Confirm the reason for the visit
* Find out the patient's current eating habit and any specific difficulties (e.g., pain, nausea, loss of appetite etc.)
* Reassure the patient that it is normal to feel weak after surgery
* Advise on suitable foods:
- start with soft, easy-to-digest foods (e.g., soups, porridge, yogurt, mashed vegetables, rice
- Gradually re-introduce normal meals as tolerated
- Encourage protein-rich foods (e.g., eggs, fish, chicken, lentils etc. ) to aid healing
- Suggest plenty of fluids to stay hydrated
* Explain the foods to limit /avoid (e.g., very fatty, oily, spicy, alcohol, or any large meals initially
* Encourage the patient to contact the doctor if any new symptoms develop
