Setting: Health Clinic
Dietitian: You are seeing a 30-year-old patient who has been diagnosed with lactose intolerance. The patient experience bloating, cramps, and diarrhea after consuming milk/milk products and is worried about how to manage his/her diet.
TASK
* Find out the reason for the visit
* Ask about the patient's typical diet, dairy intake, and symptoms.
* Explain lactose intolerance ( body has difficulty in digesting lactose in the diary)
*Advise the products to avoid ( e.g., milk, cream, soft cheese, ice cream, etc.)
* Suggest suitable alternatives (e.g., lactose-free milk, plant-based milk, hard cheese, yogurt with live cultures, etc.)
* Reassure the patient that calcium and vitamin D can be obtained from alternative and fortified foods.
* Provide practical tips: (e.g., reading food labels eating out safely, and portion control, etc.)
