Setting: Outpatient Clinic
DIETITION: You are seeing a 40-year-old patient diagnosed with acid reflex (GERD). The patient reports frequent heartburn and discomfort , especially after heavy meals. The doctor has referred him/her to you for a dietary management.
* Confirm the reason for the visit
* Ask about the patient's current eating habits, meal timing, and food triggers
* Explain acid reflex (e.g., stomach acid flowing back into the food pipe.
* Advise on foods to reduce/avoid (e.g., spicy, fried, fatty foods, chocolates, caffeine, citrus, alcohol, avoid late-night meals, etc.)
* Suggest safe options (e.g., lean proteins, whole grains, non-citrus fruits, cooked vegetables, herbal tea, etc.)
* Provide lifestyle tips:
- Eat smaller, more frequent meals
- avoid lying down immediately after eating
- Maintain healthy weight
- Elevate the head of bed if symptoms occur at night
* Reassure occasional indulgence is possible
