The doctor has asked you to see the parent of an eight-week-old baby who has extensive infantile seborrheic dermatitis (cradle cap). You have just examined the baby who is currently with the other parent in the waiting room and is not present for the discussion.
* Find out how much the parent knows about the son's condition.
* Reassure the parent about cradle cap (e.g., very common in small babies; causes: overactive sebaceous glands, not bad hygiene, no pain/discomfort for child, usually self-limiting , etc.)
* Explore hair washing routines for baby (products used, frequency, etc.
* Caution the parent about anti-dandruff shampoo (e.g., drying/irritating for baby's skin; use only mild shampoo, twice weeks; etc.
* Recommend treatment for cradle cap (e.g., applying moisture/baby oil, washing with baby shampoo, thorough rinsing, lifting crusts with soft brush, etc.)
* Advise on when to seek further medical advice (infection at cradle cap site: red skin, blisters, fever, condition spreading/unimproved following treatment; etc.,)
