Setting:  Hospital Ward


NURSE

You are discussing the diagnosis of an eighty-five-year-old woman with her son/daughter. The patient was rushed to the hospital two days ago after her skin turned a yellow tinge.

* Explain that the tests (CT scan, blood tests etc. ) were conducted to confirm the suspected condition and the results were returned.

* Ask questions about the patient's general health

* Sensitively reveal that the patient was diagnosed with cancer of the gall bladder

* Answer questions about the prognosis (a few months life expectancy, surgery/biopsy not possible due to age)

* Discuss care plan for management of the condition (transfer to hospice for palliative care)
