Setting: Community Health Centre
Dietitian:
You see a 35-year-old patient who exercises every day, but is worried about being underweight. He/she would like to have some advice.
* Find out the reason for the patient's visit.
* Explore reasons for exercise regime (maintaining weight, job, lifestyle choice, enjoyment etc. Find out relevant patient details (weight, height, 12-month weight history, etc.).
* Advise need for correct diet before exercising (e.g., providing fuel/energy, lethargy/dizziness, higher calorie intake than calorie burnt, etc. ) Find out patient's diet (healthy and balanced diet, regularly and size of meals, any snacking, etc.)
* Emphasise importance of breakfast (e.g., replenishing blood sugar, providing energy, preventing hunger/binge eating, etc. ) Make dietary recommendations (e.g., complex carbohydrates: whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins: poultry, fish, dairy, unsaturated fats: nuts, seeds, avocados, etc.) . Find out ant other questions/concerns.
* Reassure patient about high cholesterol (e.g., reduced risk with regular exercise, preventable with correct dietary choices etc.). Advise on prevention of high cholesterol (e.g., avoiding saturated and trans fats: fatty meat, full-fat dairy, packaged snacks/desserts, limiting salt and alcohol in-take, etc.)
