                                                      Role play Card - Nursing -02



Setting: Hospital 

Nurse: Your patient is a 75-year-old woman who has been admitted with pneumonia. Her lungs have become inflamed and filled with fluid or pus. She is being supported by a ventilator to assist with breathing. Her son/daughter is concerned about the need for a ventilator. 

Task

*  Find the reason for the request to see you. 

* Give information about his/her mother's condition (inflamed lungs, filled with fluid/pus, ventilator for breathing, etc.)

* Confirm the reason for using a ventilator (deliver oxygen and remove carbon dioxide, lungs unable to function etc.) Explain its benefits for the patient (currently stable, pneumonia severe for her age, close monitoring , etc)

* Resist time scale for ventilator support (defer patient to patient. adjust ventilator as per progress, removal when safe). Find out any other concerns or questions.

* Reassure about clinical decision (the most effective waay, antibiotics for infection, other supportive measures, etc) Explain to inform treatment stages.
