 IELTS Writing Task 2, Agree / Disagree


Many people believe that university students should study a full range of subjects, instead of some specific subjects. Do you agree or disagree?

It is often argued that students of higher education should study a wide range of subjects; however, others hold the view that they should specialize in some specific subjects only. [Paraphrase]. This essay will dwell on my opinion that they should pursue a full range of subjects because it helps them to develop critical thinking and problem solving abilities. [Thesis sentence]

To embark on, a broad spectrum of subjects aids the students to develop diverse skills and gain a wide range of knowledge, which in turn, helps one to become a well-rounded individual. [Argument 1]. They can imbibe deeper vision of evaluation because they learn a number of different logical and methodological approaches. Moreover, this is inevitable at a time when the focus is on multi-disciplinary studies. [Reasons].  For example, researches reveal that those who are exposed to several subjects in universities have better transferrable skills, such as communication, presentation and problem solving skills. [Example]. Thus, studying multiple subjects has more merits than confining to a specialized one. [Conclusion BP1].

Furthermore, studying a range of subjects, improves the writing skills and the ability to think creativity. [Argument 2]. Most prestigious examinations, such as the civil service examination,  include questions from all areas of knowledge, and a student with limited level of knowledge cannot thrive there. [Reasons]. For instance, a student specialized in science may be weak at Economics or History. Such lopsided knowledge level can be hazardous in a world of cut throat competition [Example]. Therefore, for several reasons, multi-disciplinary study is more desirable. [Conclusion of BP2].

To conclude, the aim of university education is to mould individuals of higher levels of competencies by which they can tackle problems wisely. This is feasible only if they are educated in several disciplines, and that is why I totally agree with the notion. [Re-phrased the Introduction].
