OET Listening - Common Surgery Names

Adenoidectomy: is a surgical procedure to remove the adenoid glands. These glands are small lumps of tissue located behind the nose in the upper airway. While adenoid helps to protect the body from viruses and bacteria, they can become swollen or enlarged due to infections, allergies, or other reasons. It's typically performed on children between 1 and 7 years old. It treats issues caused by partially blocked airways, such as trouble breathing, sleep disturbances, frequent ear infections, and chronic sinus problems.

Arthroscopy: is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat joint problems. During arthroscopy, a surgeon inserts a narrow tube with a fibre-optic video camera through a small incision (about the size of a button hole).

This allows them to view the inside of your joint on a high definition video monitor. It is performed for joints like the knee, shoulder, elbow, hip, and wrist.

Angioplasty: used to increase blood flow through a narrow artery. During angioplasty, a small balloon is ininflated in the affected blood vessel, opening it up and allowing more blood flow. This technique is commonly employed to treat conditions like atherosclerosis, where fatty deposits accumulate in the artery walls, causing blockages.
