How to explain a procedure
The Assessment Criteria for Speaking demands that a candidate to explain procedures clearly.
Here's an example of how you might explain a dental teeth whitening procedure to a patient during the OET Speaking sub-test.
Patient: Doctor, I wonder, what's this 'teeth whitening' is.
Dentist: Well, Mrs Richards, its a good question. I'm glad to explain the teeth whitening procedure we've scheduled for you today.
It's a popular cosmetic treatment that helps remove stains and discoloration from your teeth.
Patient: Great, doctor, but how do you do it?
Dentist: [Explains, simplifying medical terms] Well, It's done using a special gel that contains a bleaching agent. This is applied to your teeth, and then a light or laser is used to activate the gel, and it helps to brighten your teeth.
Patient: That sounds interesting, doctor.
Dentist: [Outlining the steps] First, we'll place a protective barrier around your gums to protect them from the gel.
Then, we'll apply the whitening gel to your teeth and use the light to enhance the process.
You'll be under the light for about 15 minutes, and we may repeat this process a few times to achieve the desired shade.
Patient: Fine, doctor, but is it painful?
Dentist: [Laughs, and address the concerns]: Not exactly. However, some patients experience sensitivity during or after the treatment, but it's usually temporary. We'll provide you with a special toothpaste to use afterwards that helps minimize any discomfort.
Patient: Wonderful. Doctor, how long, do you think, it 'll take?
Dentist: [Explaining the duration] Well, the whole procedure takes about an hour, and you'll see immediate results. Your teeth will be several shades lighter than before.
[Concluding with support] Do you have any questions about the procedure, or is there anything specific you are concerned about? I'm here to ensure you feel comfortable and informed.
Note that the candidate uses clear, patient-friendly language to explain the procedure, addresses potential concerns, and offers reassurance, which are all important aspects of OET Speaking sub-test.
