 OET Writing Grammar - Verb Forms


Verbs show actions. The common verbs we use in OET Writing are:

Advise, admit, begin, come, deteriorate,  examine,  give, improve, start, suggest, suffer, recommend, reveal.

These verbs have to be used in five forms in OET Writing:

i) Base form

ii) Present 's' form

iii) Simple past

iv) Past participle

v) -ing form (present participle)


Advise - advises - advised - advised - advising

admit - admits - admitted - admitted - admitting

begin - begins - began - begun - beginning

come - comes - came - come - coming

deteriorate - deteriorates - deteriorated - deteriorating

examine - examines - examined - examined- examining

give - gives - gave - given - giving.

improve - improves - improved - improving

start - starts - started - started - starting

suggest - suggests - suggested - suggesting

suffer - suffers - suffered - suffering

recommend - recommends - recommended - 

reveal - reveals - revealed - revealed - revealing




Present tense

I start the journey early.

You start the journey early.

He/She/It  starts the journey early.

We start the journey early.

They start start the journey early.

Simple past and past perfect

If the simple past form ends in -ed, the past perfect form is also -ed.

Simple past and past perfect
Past perfect always take has/have .

I gave an injection.
I have have given.....

You gave an injection.

You have given....

He/She/It  gave an injection.
He / She has given.....

We gave an injection.
We have given ......

They gave an injection.
They have given.....
