Writing Task 2.

Model Essay

You should spent about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic.

Some people believe that the huge amount of money that is funneled into space research should be used for the development of health and education. However, others think that space technology is important and cannot be ignored. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Over the years, billions of dollars have been spent on exploring the space. It is often argued that this amount is squandered and could be utilized in solving the earth's multiple problems, while others entirely support these investments. This essay will dwell on both the views and validate my opinion that governments should cease spending public fund on these useless quests.

To embark on, the proponents of space researches plead that these studies could salvage the humans. They feel that if the scientists found a habitable planet, we could possibly migrate or extract its resources in the future. For instance, explorers have already identified the presence of water on the Mars and further studies would lead to the fruitful results. Thus, to these advocates , public money is well-spent and these organizations should continue their specific studies for the subsistence of mankind.

On the flip side, a section of the demographics is against the idea of investing in space researches. They feel that these funds could be spent on more meaningful causes.  Having spent millions of public's money on space technology, the researchers achieved so far negligible. Therefore, instead of spending an enormous portion of the budget on researching other planets, it could be used to provide better education, healthcare and housing facilities to the population. Furthermore, private organizations, such as Tesla and Amazone are heavily investing in space researches. Hence, it is time for the governmental bodies to focus on their primary duty of serving the citizens.

To conclude, although space researches could lead to migration of the earth's population, this pursuit could be a waste of money because the outcomes are meagre and the funds be better utilized if they serve human beings on this planet. This essay has established my opinion that funding space research should be discontinued and the focus should be on promoting better living conditions for one and all.

 Writing Task 1 Academic

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant

(Refer Cambridge IELTS Academic - 14, page 72 for the diagram)

The given diagram is a cyclic process which shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.

Overview, the process is divided into four stages: storing water in the high-level reservoir, letting this water flow down to generate electricity during the day, pumping back the water to high-level reservoir in the night , and the cycle is continued in the day.

During the day, the intake is opened and the water from the high-level is channeled downward. This powerful flow of water falls on the turbines and electricity is generated, while the water flow into the low-level reservoir.

During the night, the water stored in the low-level reservoir is pumped back to the high-level reservoir, while the inflow remains closed. The reversible turbines which operates the generator during the day, pumps back the water in the low-level reservoir at night. The cycle is continued.
