IELTS Band Descriptors for Speaking says that in order to win a grade 7 and above you have to do the following under Lexical Resources:

* Uses vocabulary resource flexibly to discuss a variety of topics.
* Uses less common and idiomatic vocabulary and shows some awareness of style and collocation ....
* Uses paraphrase effectively.

you are supplied an idiom a day and practise them on a daily basis.
