Part 3 Discussion - Sample Answers

1. Do you believe that life has been made easier through the use of technology?

Ans: Certainly, technology has significantly improved our lives in various ways. For example, instant messaging, videoconferencing and social media has radically improved our life.

Convenience that technology offers, I think, is worth mentioning. Online banking and e-commerce have indeed improved our life.

Last but not least, is entertainment. Lifelike digital experience we get is a blessing of technology.

2. Are there any disadvantages of using technology?

Ans: Well, while technology has brought immense benefits, it also comes with some drawbacks. The first and foremost is the social isolation. There is a reduced face-to-face interaction these days because of over-reliance on technology.

e-waste is another downside of technology. Disposal of electronic devices harm the environment.

Finally the health impacts. It promotes a sedentary lifestyle. Excessive screen time can lead to physical inactivity and health issues.

3. Why might some people feel unhappy when new technology is introduced at their workplace?

Ans: Well, it's an interesting question. I guess, it's the fear of change and a fear of the unknown. New technology disrupts established routines, leading to uncertainty and discomfort. Inadequate training on new tools can lead to frustration. Employees need proper guidance to use technology effectively.

Furthermore, adapting to unfamiliar tools or software can be challenging. Employees may feel overwhelmed by the need to acquire new skills quickly.

4. What can employers do to encourage employees to embrace new technology?

Ans: Well, I think, employees must be offered comprehensive training by means of workshops, webinars, and hands-on sessions.  Employers can arrange ongoing skill development through online courses.

Moreover, recognize early adopters with incentives and bonuses. This is what they do in the Technopark in Trivandrum , for example.

5. In your opinion, is it easier to develop new inventions today compared to the past?

Ans: Absolutely! The pace of technological change today is remarkably faster than in the past.

For example, out grandparents couldn't imagine a world connected by smartphones and the internet. Technologies that were unimaginable during their youth became a reality later in life.

Furthermore, now, we experience rapid advancement in areas like AI and biotechnology which can easily develop new inventions faster than in the past.

6. What role, do you think, the government should play in regulating new invention and technologies?

Ans: Well, give me a few seconds..... Well, I think the role of government in regulating new inventions and technologies is critical for ensuring a balance between innovation, safety and societal well-being.

Governments should strike a balance between encouraging innovation and safeguarding public interests. Also, they can play a vital role addressing ethical problems related to technology.   That's what I think.

NOTE:

In PART 3 Discussion, go on speaking until the interviewer stops you and don't just answer and stop. Display your best English, instead.

In Part 3, it is quite possible that you have to speak about something you have never heard of. If you don't know the subjecttell the examiner soon, so he could ask you another question. Mind you, if you don't tell him and start trying to speak, he might think that it is not a knowledge problem, but a language problem.

Interestingly enough, the current  Part 3 questions are akin to Writing Task 2.
