-ed Pronunciation

 

How to pronounce the  '-ed'  past tense of these words


Work  - worked

Laugh - laughed 

Help - helped

Kiss -kissed

Wash - washed

Watch - watched


Want - wanted

Need -needed

decide -decided

Start -started

Live - lived


Play - played

Hug -hugged

Call - called

Love -loved

Clean -cleaned

Rob - robbed


The -ed ending  in English past tense verbs has three possible pronunciations depending on the final sound of the verb 


Look at the final words of the verbs in present tense


Work  - worked    - /k/

Laugh - laughed   - /f/

Help - helped        - /p/

Kiss -kissed           - /s/

Wash - washed      - /sh/

Watch - watched   -/ch/


k, p, f, s, sh, ch  --- These six sounds are voiceless consonants.


In such cases, the pronunciation of -ed shall be /t/.


Work  -       worked      - workt

Laugh -       laughed     - laught 

Help -         helped        - Helpt

Kiss -          kissed          - Kist

Wash -        washed       - washt

Watch -      watched      -washt
