OET Speaking (NURSING)
Sepsis
Setting: Hospital
NURSE
You are speaking to a patient undergoing chemotherapy, who has presented with a fever, chills and general malaise. After conducting a clinical assessment, you have identified signs suggestive of sepsis. You should outline the immediate treatment plan and address his/her concerns.
TASK
* Find out how the patient is feeling
* Confirm the diagnosis (sepsis) . Explain what sepsis is( e.g., body's severe response to infection, needs, urgent treatment).
* Give reasons for your clinical opinion (e.g., fever, chills weakness.) Provide possible causes (e.g., chemotherapy, weakened immune system, common risk)
* Outline the immediate actions(e.g., hospitalisation, starting IV antibiotics, fluids) Mention what to expect (e.g., close monitoring, vital signs, blood tests/cultures) to identify the infection source,
* Reassure about potential fear/anxiety (e.g., normal to feel overwhelmed, focus on recovery) and treatment (e.g., acting quickly, experienced team.) Find out any worries or questions.
* Briefly explain antibiotic action (e.g., fight infection, improve symptoms). Discuss expected recovery (e.g., gradual improvement, rest is key, complete course of antibiotics).
* Mention duration of IV treatment (e.g., several days, depends on response). Establish consent for hospitalisation.
