                          Cataract Surgery- Post-Operation

Setting: Home Visit

NURSE

You are visiting a 65-year-old patient who recently had cataract surgery to check on how the patient is doing, assess compliance with post-operative care, and address any concerns or questions he/she may have.

TASK

* Confirm the reason for the visit (post-op assessment). Find out how the patient has been feeling since the cataract surgery (e.g., pain, discomfort, changes in vision, etc.)

* Reassure the patient about common post-operative symptoms (e.g., mild discomfort or blurriness) and discuss signs of complications that require medical attention (e.g., increased pain, loss of vision, discharge etc.). Explore post-operative care compliance (e.g., using prescribed eye drops, avoid rubbing the eye, and wearing an eye shield at night).

* Remind the importance of eye care and protection (e.g., wearing sunglasses outdoors, avoiding dusty/smoky environments, refraining from heavy lifting/strenuous activities.) Discuss medication compliance (use prescribed medications such as antibiotics/anti-inflammatory eye drops as directed, complete the full course, etc.) and suggest tear drops for itchiness.

Encourage patient to resume mild activities (reading/watching TV, gardening, household chores, etc.) . Provide assurance on recovery ( typically smooth, no complications, takes a few weeks, etc.) and success rate(vision improves greatly for most people)

* Remind the patient of their next follow-up appointment (monitor recovery, vision improvement, further plan, etc.). Find out any concerns or questions.
