Setting: Hospital Outpatient

Dietitian

You are seeing a 50-year-old patient who has recently been diagnosed with hypertension. The doctor recommended dietary changes using DASH diet.


TASK

* Confirm the reason for the visit.

* Find out the patient's current eating habits and food preferences.

* Explain hypertension and why diet matters.

* Explain DASH. (e.g., Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension, healthy eating pattern to high blood pressure and cholesterol). Emphasis the risk of diabetes type 2 and obesity

* Advise on foods to increase (e.g., fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy, nuts, seeds, poultry.

* Advise on foods to increase (e.g., fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy, nuts, beans, seeds, fish, poultry) 

* Suggest practical tips: (e.g.,  limit salt, read food labels, cook with herbs/spices, healthy meal planning 

* Reassure that gradual changes can still be effective.
