For many years patients with Gaucher disease, especially those with significant skeletal involvement, bone crises are a common and debilitating symptom. These events, characterised by severe localized bone pain, are often a result of avascular necrosis and can be the first presenting symptom in some adults. A recent study has explored the role of bisphosphonate therapy in conjunction with ERT to improve bone dentistry and reduce the frequency and severity of these crises. The findings suggest that while ERT helps to clear the lipid-laden cells from the bone marrow, an added therapy is often required to repair the long-term structural damage. The study highlights that a multi-pronged approach is necessary to tackle the full spectrum of Gaucher disease.

QUESTION: What information is provided about the bone crisis?

A) They can be the first sign in some adults.
