Setting: Hospital Clinic
This 45-year-old patient recently had a blood test, which indicated low iron levels. He/she has started taking a daily iron supplement. The doctor has asked you to speak to the patient about his/her dietary iron.
TASK
1. Find out what patient understands about iron deficiency.
2. Explain iron deficiency (e.g., common nutritional disorder, low stored/ blood-borne iron levels, can lead to anemia, etc. ) Find out any relevant family history ( bowel cancer, endometriosis, etc)
3. Explore patient's diet (e.g., red meat, dark leafy greens, etc.)
4. Recommend diet to boost iron levels (e.g., increased consumption: lean red meat, oily fish, fortified cereals, iron absorption assisted by vitamin C, etc.
5. Advise against substances which inhibit iron absorption. (e.g., caffeine, red wine, calcium rich foods, etc.)
6. Stress that iron supplements only short term solution (e.g., side-effects: constipation. nausea, possible interference with other medications.
