Part 3 Discussion - Sample Answer

1. Can we judge a person by their appearance?

Ans: Well, I think, Yes and No.

Yes, because it's quite natural for us to form quick judgement based on visual cues. Besides, first appearance can signal cultural or social affiliation. For example, clothing choices, hairstyles, and body language convey information about a person's personal background.

No, because relying solely on appearance can lead to harmful stereotypes. Assuming someone's character, abilities, or intelligence based on how they look is unfair. These traits are often often discovered through deeper interaction.

Therefore, in my opinion, while initial impressions matter, it's essential to recognize their limitations.

2. How important do you think is the first impression?

Ans: I think, the first impression sets the tone for subsequent interactions and influences how others perceive us. In social settings, a warm smile and friendly approach can lead to meaningful connections. However, once we form an impression, we tend to seek evidence that confirms it. So, strong initial impression can shape subsequent interactions.

3. Do you believe that a person's clothing and appearance can affect their professional success?

Ans: Well, that's a hard question; I never thought about it. However, I believe, a person's clothing and appearance can significantly impact their professional success.

Dressing professionally signals competence, attention to detail, and respect for the workplace environment. For instance,  the superiors and peers notice when you make an effort to look polished and respectful. Moreover, during job interviews a professional appearance contributes to a favourable evaluation.

4. Do you think that now personal appearance is more important than in the past?

Ans: Certainly. Personal appearance has always played a significant role inhuman interactions, but its importance may have shifted over time.

In the past, there was a rigid dress code and people adhered to these norms to fit in and convey social status. Appearance was closely tied to class, profession, and and cultural expectations.  For example, formal clothes was essential for certain professions and social events.

However, today, there's more flexibility. Individual expression is valued, and diverse styles co-exist. Globalisation and exposure to different cultures have influenced fashion and beauty standards.

5. How do social media platforms influence our perception of beauty and appearance?

Ans: I guess, social media platforms play a significant role in shaping our perception of beauty and appearance. Images of seemingly perfect faces and bodies flood social media. These images often undergo heavy editing  and enhancements, creating an illusion of perfection. As a result people are exposed to unattainable beauty ideals, leading to body dissatisfaction and low esteem in both men and women.

Again, I think, comparison is a common behaviour on social media. People compare themselves to others, especially influencers and celebrities. When individuals perceive themselves as worse off than those they see online, it might negatively impact their body image.

6. Should schools and workplaces have dress codes or uniforms?

Ans: In my opinion, uniforms have both merits and demerits.

The merit include equality, professionalism and focus on learning or work.  For instance uniforms creates a level playing field reducing socio-economic disparities. Moreover, they eliminate distractions related to fashion choices.

On the other hand, uniforms have drawbacks, because they limit self-expression and creativity. Again, cost is another factor;  families or employees may bear the expense of purchasing uniforms.

As a solution to it some schools and workplaces allow 'colour dress' one day a week.

NOTE:

In PART 3 Discussion, go on speaking until the interviewer stops you and don't just answer and stop. Display your best English, instead.

In Part 3, it is quite possible that you have to speak about something you have never heard of. If you don't know the subjecttell the examiner soon, so he could ask you another question. Mind you, if you don't tell him and start trying to speak, he might think that it is not a knowledge problem, but a language problem.
