Role play Card.
Setting: Health Clinic
Doctor: A 62-year-old patient presented two months ago with herpes zoster (shingles) . He/she is now re-presented with the complaints of post-herpetic neuralgia (the nerve that often lingers after a shingle rash goes away).
Task:
* Explain to the patient the cause of the pain
* Recommend common analgesia as the first line treatment and explain the after-effects of strong pain medications (opioids)
* Give Capsaicin cream for topical application
* Explain the side-effects and steps need to be followed while applying the Capsaicin cream (e.g., a slight stinging or burning sensation o the skin, wear gloves while applying the cream to the affected area)
* Prescribe anti-convulsant drugs and explain the effects of it (Gabapentin or pregabalin may be useful, if necessary)
* Explain that non-pharmacological may help (e.g., relaxation - meditation, adhesive dressing and cognitive behavioral therapy)
