OET Speaking sub-test -Overview

 OET Speaking  Sub-test - Overview

1. Start Strong: Begin the roleplay by greeting the patient/relative, introducing yourself, clarifying the purpose of the interaction, and building a rapport.

* Begin with a polite greeting and a smile to make a good first impression and establish rapport.

2. Understanding the Roleplay Card: Pay  attention to the setting, patient information, and the tasks listed on the card. Use the preparation time to underline the key verbs and think of relevant phrases and vocabulary.

* Setting:  The 'Setting' in the OET Speaking test is of paramount importance because it provides the context in which the roleplay takes place. Establish whether it is a hospital, clinic, ward, A&E ward, pharmacy or any other healthcare setting.

* Setting influences the language and terminology you should use.

For example (i) in an emergency room, you should quickly assess the patient's condition, provide reassurance and immediate care. The language used should be direct, clear, and aimed at calming the patient while gathering essential information swiftly.

(ii) In an out-patient Clinic, you can use a more conversational tone, taking the time to explain the condition, discuss the changes, and answer the questions. The language should be informative, supportive and encouraging to help the patient to understand and manage their condition.

(iii) Pediatric Clinic: The healthcare professional would need to communicate effectively with both the parent and the child and provide clear explanations to the parent.

3. Use Positive Language: Always use positive language to make the patient feel comfortable and relaxed. This is crucial for healthcare professionals.

* Focus on Solutions: Instead of highlighting problems, talk about the solutions or the next steps. For example, say: " Let's see how we can manage your symptoms" instead of saying,         " You have a problem with your blood pressure".

* Encourage and reassure: Use words that encourage the patient and provide reassurance, like " you are doing great" or " we are making good progress"

* Be affirmative: Use affirmative phrases like " I understand", " I can help with that" or "We will take care of it"

* Avoid negative Phrases: Use phrases that will clear of anxiety and negativity. For example, don't say " Don't worry", which implies there's something to worry about. Better say, " I'm here to support you".

* Express understanding and empathy: Phrases like "I see what you mean" or "That sounds challenging" shows empathy and understanding.

* Offer Compliments: When appropriate, compliment the patient on their efforts or progress, like " You have made great improvement in managing your health"

4. Explain Procedures Clearly: Make sure to explain medical procedures in detail to ensure the patient understands them.

5. Listen and Respond: Active listening is key. Respond appropriately to the patient's concerns and questions.

6. Show Empathy: Use clear pronunciation and convey empathy effectively.

Here are some empathetic phrases that can be useful in the OET Speaking:

3. I'm sorry to hear that you are facing this challenge.

5. I understand how overwhelming this must be.

6. Be cheerful and I'm here to help you in this.

7. I appreciate your sharing it with me.

8. Be cheerful. We are here to help you.

7. Offer Advice: Learn how to advice in a firm yet empathetic manner, especially when the patient needs to change their habits.

You may use phrases like:

1. I highly recommend.

2. It's important that....

3. It would be a great idea to.....

4. I strongly suggest that....

5. It would be beneficial to....
