When preparing for OET Reading, it's essential to expand your vocabulary beyond medical terms.

Here are some useful vocabulary words and phrases that can help you tackle unfamiliar expressions and improve your reading comprehension.


1. Compounding effect: The cumulative impact of multiple factors.

Example: The compounding effect of poor lifestyle choices, such as smoking and lack of exercise, can significantly increase the risk of chronic diseases.


2. Plausible: Believable or reasonable.

Example: The patient's symptoms were consistent with a viral infection, making a bacterial cause less plausible.


3. Jargon: Specialized language used within a particular field.

Example: The doctor effectively communicated the diagnosis to the patient, avoiding unnecessary medical jargon.


4. To give an account: To provide an explanation or description.

Example: The patient was asked to give an account of their symptoms, including duration, severity, and any associated factors.


5. Hard knock: A difficult or challenging experience.

Example: The patient's hard knock to the head resulted resulted in a mild concussion, prompting further assessment.


6. To undertake: To take on or carry out a task.

Example; The nursing team decided to undertake a comprehensive assessment of the patient's mobility and functional abilities.


7. Disoriented: Confused or lacking direction.

Example: After the fall, the elderly patient felt disoriented, unable to recall where they were or how they got there.


8. To clear up: To resolve or explain.

Example: After the administering the antibiotics, the patient's symptoms began to clear up, and fever subsided.


9. Settle: To solve or reach an agreement.

Example: After receiving appropriate treatment, the patient's symptoms began to settle, and they reported feeling less discomfort.


10. Evidence is fairly slim: There's limited supporting evidence.
