OET Writing -Time Prepositions


In OET Writing, time prepositions are used to indicate when something happens. They help to clearly communicate the timing of events, which is crucial in the healthcare context that OET covers.  

* At:  for specific times (e.g., at 3 o'clock, at noon).
The patient's medication needs to be administered at 6 am, and 6 pm daily.
* In: for months, years, seasons (e.g., in May, in 2024, in winter)
The patient was admitted in the early hours of the early hours of the morning. 
* On: for days of the week and specific dates (e.g., on Monday, on December 25th)
The follow-up appointment is scheduled on the 15th of June.
* During: to indicate something that happens within a certain period (e.g., during the night, during the patient's stay)
The patient experienced increased discomfort during the night. 
* Until: to indicate something that continues up to a certain point (e.g., until discharge, until the end of the month)
Continue the IV fluids until the patient's hydration status improves. 
* By: to indicate a deadline or the latest time by which something should happen ( by 5.00 pm, by the next visit)
The lab reports should be made available by tomorrow afternoon.
* Since: to indicate the starting time of a period (e.g., since the last week, since the diagnosis)
The patient has been experiencing the symptoms since the last week,
* For: to indicate the duration of time (e.g., for two hours, for several weeks)
The patient has been prescribed antibiotics for a duration of seven days. 
* Within: to indicate something that happens inside a particular period (e.g., within 24 hours, within the treatment period)
The surgery is expected to be completed within two hours.
