OET Writing - How to write Passive voice.
Structure of Active Voice:
Subject + Verb + Object.
Subject (S) = Action doer.
Verb (V) = The action
Object (O) = Ask the question what/whom to the verb.
Ex: The nurse (S) gave (V) an injection (what -O).
The doctor (S) discharged (V) the patient ( whom - O)
The nurse (s) gave (v) Peter (whom- O 1) an injection (what O 2).
Passive Voice
Where do to use Passive Voice:
i) when you want to give importance to the patient, medication, or other treatments
ii) action doer is comparatively less important or not mentioned.
How to change the active into passive.
i) Note the S and O of the active voice sentence
ii) Note the tense
iii) ensure what's the "be" form to be used. [ is, am are( present tense) was, were (past tense) , been, being]
iv) ensure what's the past participle form of the verb (V3) in active voice to be used.
Structure of Passive voice:
O + be + V3 + S
Example
1. The nurse (s) gave (v) an injection (O1) to him (O2). (Active).
He was given an injection.. (Passive).
2. The doctor prescribed paracetamol to Mr Smith (Active)
Mr Smith was prescribed paracetamol. (passive)
3. I ordered an ECG and increased the dose of Anginine. (Active)
An ECG was ordered and the dose of Anginine was increased (Passive)
4. I have informed the patient of the results (Active)
The patient has been informed of the results(Passive)
Do not use Passive form for a natural process.
eg. His wound is healing well (correct)
His wound has healed (correct)
His wound was healed (wrong)
