 Reading sub-test 1-6

In this part of the test, there are six short extracts relating to the work of health professionals.

For questions 1-6, choose the answer (A, B or C) which you think fits best according to the text. Shade the bubble as your answer.

Questions: 1-6

1. What does the manual tell us about platelet plug?

A. obstruct the aperture and contain the blood flow

B. occludes aperture and continues the blood flow

C. open the aperture and stops the blood flow.

                       Platelet function analyzer 100 system

It creates an artificial vessel consisting of a sample reservoir, a capillary, and a biologically active membrane with a central aperture coated with collagen plus  ADP, or collagen plus epinephrine. The application of constant negative pressure aspirates the anticoagulated blood of the sample from the reservoir through the capillary and the aperture. A platelet plug is formed which gradually occludes the aperture and ultimately the blood flow through the aperture gradually decreases and eventually stops. The time needed for blood flow interruption is recorded.

 How to do it:

Step i. Read the question and underline the key words, if any.

1. What does the manual  tell us about platelet plug?

The key word is "platelet plug"

Step ii. Read the answer choices and underline the key words.

A. obstruct the aperture and contain the blood flow

B. occludes aperture and continues the blood flow

C. open the aperture and stops the blood flow.

Step iii. If there is a key word in the question, locate it  and read that sentence in the text or the topic sentence carefully.

"A platelet plug is formed which gradually occludes the aperture and ultimately the blood flow through the aperture gradually decreases and eventually stops."

iv. Identify the right choice using synonyms or paraphrasing  language by comparing the answer choices and the text.

Choice A. obstruct [= close up an opening = occlude = block] the aperture and contain [=hold within = stop] the blood flow.

This is the idea mentioned in the text; therefore, the choice is right.

Step iv. Eliminate the wrong ones.

B. occludes aperture and continues the blood flow

The text says "blood flow .... stops", which is contrary to the answer choice "continues the blood flow" . B eliminated.

C. open the aperture and stops the blood flow.

The text says " .... platelet plug ..... gradually occludes [= block] the aperture", which is contrary to the answer choice "open the aperture".   C. eliminated.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Question 2. The purpose of these notes about mannequins is to:

A. introducing a form of substitute training.

B. give guidelines on potentially dangerous procedures.

C. recommend a new procedure in a safe way.

Mannequins

Mannequins are a great way to familiarise yourself with a new procedure and also maintain familiarity with a previously learnt procedure in a safe way. They are especially useful for infrequently performed, potentially dangerous procedures such as surgical chest drain insertion. Mannequins alone are not an acceptable substitute for multiple supervised procedures on 'real' patients. Other forms of substitute training include the use of animal models, which carries ethical implications, and high-fidelity simulation.

How to do it

i. Read the question and underline the key words, if any.

ii. Read the answer choices and underline the key words.

iii. If there is a key word in the question, locate it  and read that sentence in the text or the topic sentence.

iv. Identify the right choice using synonyms or paraphrasing  language...

v.  Eliminate the wrong ones.

Step i. Read the question and underline the key words, if any.

Question 2. The purpose of these notes about mannequins is to: There is no key word.

Step ii.  Read the answer choices and underline the key words.

A. Introducing a form of substitute training.

B. give guidelines on potentially dangerous procedures.

C. recommend a new procedure in a safe way

Step iii.  If there is a key word in the question, locate it  and read that sentence in the text or the topic sentence.
There is no keyword in the question, so start reading from the topic sentence (= the first sentence) onward keeping the keywords in mind.

Step iv. Identify the right choice using synonyms or paraphrasing  language from each answer choice.

A. Introducing a form of substitute training.

The keywords "a form of substitute training" is in the last sentence of the text. The sentence means that mannequins are suitable as " a form of substitute training".

so,  A is the right choice.

Step v.  Eliminate the wrong ones.

B. give guidelines on potentially dangerous procedures.
The second sentence says "they are especially useful for infrequently (= only rarely)performed dangerous procedures....". It is clear that A is a better choice, and B can be eliminated.

C. recommend a new procedure in a safe way

Read the topic sentence. Mannequins are useful for familiarising, but they are not "recommended". So, C is eliminated. Therefore, the right answer is  A.
