English Language Proficiency Program


In this fast emerging world, science and technology, especially that of AI,  is offering umpteen job opportunities to bright young engineers. However, the constant concern among the recruiters is the 'unemployability' of these otherwise academically proficient candidates: they fall short of proficiency in communication skills. 

Centre for American Studies (CAS), hereby, proposes an amiable  year-long program to escalate the competence of young engineers and empower them to  face the new brave confidently.

Phase 1:

* Instill confidence and conviction among the individual  students, who are newly exposed to the profession campus, by gradually severing away their timidity  and enable them to face an audience and vent out their mind confidently in English.

* To this end, they require (a)  ideas/matter, (b) right vocab to convey the ideas and (c) adequate grammar level to deliver the message.

(a) Familiarise them with national and international developments in the field science and technology, economics and sociology. for instance. Teach them how to gather ideas and wield them. 

Communication skills covered:

1. Clarity and Confidence

2. Structured response,

3. Active Listening,

4. Vocabulary and grammar

5. Pronunciation,

6. Body language

7. Practice speaking English

8. Mock Interviews and 

9.Body Language


Activities involved: Personal interviews, GDs, Debates and Group Activities.

Resources: Newspapers, magazines, google and AI, Ted talks, formal interviews and speeches by eminent leaders.

(b) Regular indulgence of (a) furnish them to gather vocab which they can compile in their "My Dictionary". 

(c) Most students consider grammar as their bête noire and in phase 1, must focus on contextual grammar rather than the lass-room grammar.

Duration: 30 hours (15 days x 120 minutes)


Phase 2:

While Phase 1 aims at re-enforcing confidence, Phase 2  looks forward to surging the skills of writing effective English. It is done in collaboration with the activities of  Phase one.

Focus of Writing:

Structure and Coherence, Central Ideas and logical Development, Critical thinking and Analysis , Vocabulary and Grammar and Clarity.

Duration: 30 hours (15 days x 120 minutes)


Phase 3:

Phase 3 aims at preparing those who underwent Phase 1 and 2 successfully to enable them to face rigorous tests and Interview Boards of all Competitive Exams.

It involves mainly (i) Verbal Ability (VA) and (ii)  Reading Comprehension (RC) 

VA includes: Para jumble, Misfit sentence, Summary completion, FIBs, Cloze Tests, Critical Reasoning, Synonyms, Antonyms, Confusable.
RC includes: Direct Questions, Critical Reasoning, Tone, Title, Assumption, Strengthening/Weakening, Parallel Reasoning, Inference. Agreement/Disagreement, Paraphrase. 'Must-be True', Fact-based questions, and vocab based questions.

Duration: 40 hours (20 days x 120 minutes)

Mock tests: At the end of each Phase there shall be Mock Test to assess the candidate.
