How to use present perfect tense.

The present perfect tense tense is used in the OET writing to describe actions that occured at an unspecified time in the past but are relevant to the current context.

It expresses actions that started in the past and are still ongoing, and to highlight the completion that has present relevance.

i) In describing ongoing treatment.

Example: Mrs Jones has been receiving physiotherapy for six months.

ii) Indicating the start time of treatment: If the start time of a treatment is relevant to the current context, present perfect is used.

Example: She has been on ciprofloxacin since her diagnosis last week.

iii) Expressing duration: He has been in remission for two years.

What is the difference between

 Simple past and Present perfect?

1. Simple Past

Simple past tense indicates actions that happened in the past and are not continuing now.

Example: I worked in Apollo Hospital last year.

It is also used to describe completed actions in the past with a specific time reference.

Example: She visited Paris in 2012.

2. Present perfect tense.

It is used to talk about events that started in the past , but still have a connection to the present.

Example: She has worked in Apollo for five years. (= even now she is in Apollo )

The simple past is used with a specific time marker for actions that started and finished in the past.

The present perfect is used without a time marker for actions that began in the past, but still have a connection to the present.
