OET Writing : Grammar - How to use Comma

OET Writing : Grammar - How to use Comma

The use of comma is essential for clear and effective communication in  OET Writing.

1.  Use of comma in  Complex Sentences:

A complex sentence is made up of two clauses, one of which is independent and the other is dependent.

The structure of a complex sentence:

i) Independent clause + dependent clause.

e.g., Treatment will begin after a full diagnosis is made.

ii) Dependent clause +  comma + independent clause.

e.g., After the diagnosis is made, treatment will begin.

2.  Compound Sentences:

Compound sentences are made up of two or more independent clauses. They are joined by a comma and a coordinating conjunction (for, and, but, or, yet).

The structure is:

Independent clause + comma+ independent  clause.

e.g., Mr Smith is recovering after the surgery, and he can be discharged today.

3. Listing ideas or items: In English, it is possible to list ideas or items in a sentence if they are separated by a comma, including the final item, which would also have the word "and" or "or".

Common mistakes to avoid when using commas.

1. Comma Splice: This happens when two independent clauses are joined with a comma but without a coordinating conjunction.

* Incorrect: She was running late, we went to the venue without her.

* Correct:  She was running late. We went to the venue without her.

2. Unnecessary comma after a verb: A comma is not needed after a verb.

* Incorrect: She laughed, when she heard the story.

* Correct: She laughed when she heard the story.

3. A comma before a verb in Long sentences:

* Incorrect: What she believed to be true, was in fact a lie.

* Correct: What she believed to be true was in fact a lie.

4. Comma after a conjunction: Comma after after a conjunction is usually not needed.

* Incorrect: The match was called off because, it was raining.

* Correct: The match was called off because it was raining.

5. A comma after "that" in reported speech:

* Incorrect: He wished that, she were a cat.
