A and An are indefinite articles
THE is definite article.
Indefinite articles - A and An - are used with singular countable nouns only.
The - definite article - is used when we tell about something again.

All procedures are countable nouns. So, use A/An with procedures.
Example:
A hysterectomy, a colonoscopy, a CT scan, an MRI, an operation,
a blood test, a sample, an examination, a biopsy, an ultrasound,
a mammogram......
Do not use a/an with medical conditions:

Use of THE
1. Job roles and Medical Professionals
When referring to specific job roles or medical professionals use "the".
Example: The nurse provided excellent wound care.
However, if you are discussing job roles in a general sense, use "a" or "an".
Example: A doctor should review the patient's history.
Use 'The' before all professions:
Example: The doctor, the nurse, the physiotherapist, the dietician.....
2. Specific vs General nouns
"The" is used for specific nouns indicating that the noun is unique or known to both the reader and writer.
Example: Please administer the medication.
A/An is used for general nouns referring to any of that noun type.
Example: She needs a wheelchair.
3. First Mention vs Subsequent Mentions.
When mentioning something for the first time, use the indefinite article, a/an.
Example: I saw a patient with severe chest pain.
However, when mentioned subsequently, use "the".
Example: The patient was admitted to the cardiac ward.
