OET: Lecture notes on: Active and Passive Voices
OET: Use of Passive Voice in OET Writing.
Change the following into Passive Voices:
1. The doctor discharged Mr Roberts.
2. I prescribed aspirin to Mrs Smith
3. I X-rayed Mrs Green's leg.
4. The dietician advised her not to eat porridge.
5. I will discharge her tomorrow.
6. The nurse took Mr Sharma's blood.
7. The doctor examined him.
8. I have examined her.
9. The doctor advised Ms Lisa to quit smoking.
10. Smoking has killed millions of people.
11. The vaccination program has saved millions of lives
12. Her mother died of uterine cancer.
Subject and Object of a sentence
1. The doctor discharged Mr Roberts.
2. I prescribed aspirin to Mrs Smith
3. She X-rayed Mrs Green's leg.
4. The dietician advised her not to eat porridge.
5. The doctor will discharge her tomorrow.
The subject does the action indicated by the verb
Ask the question -
what to verb = Object 1.
whom to the verb = Object 2.
1. The doctor discharged Mr Roberts.
discharged whom? = Mr Roberts - Object
2. I prescribed aspirin to Mrs Smith
prescribed whom? = Mrs Smith - Object
3. She X-rayed Mrs Green's leg.
X-rayed what = Mrs Green's leg - Object.
4. The dietician advised her not to eat porridge.
advised what? = Porridge - object 1; whom? = her - object 2
5. The doctor will discharge her tomorrow.
will discharge whom = her - Object
* In active voice, the subject is emphasised, while in passive voice object is emphasised.
** In the OET Writing, we usually give emphasis on the patient and for that use passive voice.
