White Filling: White Fillings are available on the NHS and are generally charged as Band 2. [NHS, National Health Service, is the publicly funded healthcare system that provides medical service to residents, regardless of their ability to pay. These services include visiting doctors, receiving hospitals.

Band 2: In England and Wales, dental treatments are categorized based on their complexity and service provided. A Band 2 Dental treatment involves 73.50 pounds in England. What is included in Band 2:

* Addition to Denture, Apicectomy, Mouth Guards, Fillings, Gingival Grafts, Frenectomy, Frenoplasty, or Frenotomy, Oral Surgery, Pulpotomy,, Reclining and Rebasing Dentures, Tooth Extraction, Root Canal Treatment, Sealant Application Splinting Loose Teeth, and Tooth Transplantation]

For example, if you need a filling in one of your front teeth (incisors and canines), the filling material of choice may be a white filling.

If the filling is in one of your back teeth (such as molars and premolars) for a large filling the more clinically effective option may be an amalgam filling ( a silver-coloured material).

If you prefer to have the white filling or any other cosmetic filling options, your dentist will be able to advise you on the private costs for such treatments, and the risks and benefits associated with it.

Oral Health facts & tips: gum health

1. Brushing each day with a fluoride paste is vital. Make sure that you do this for two minutes, last thing at night before you go to bed and at least one other time during the day.

2. Clean between your teeth once-a-day with interdental brushes or floss. Ask your dental team if you need any assistance and they will show you how to do this properly, ensuring these tight spaces your toothbrush cannot reach and clean.

3. Try your best to cut down and quit smoking. Smoking tobacco can make gum diseases worse and can also have other adverse effects. Foe example, it is a leading cause of mouth cancer.

4. Maintain regular visits to your dental team. They can give you thorough check-up of your teeth and gums, remove harmful plaque and tartar and advise you on how to look after your oral health between appointments.

5. Get out there and exercise. A recent study has shown that people who stay fit are less likely to develop serious gum infections that lead to gum diseases.  Remember that oral health and oral well-being is all linked.
