Part 3 Discussion - Sample Answers
1. What are the differences between painting and drawing?
Ans: Well, it's an interesting question, but I have never thought about it. However, I think, in drawing, artists use dry media such as pens, chalk, pencils, ink or crayons, but in painting the artists make use of wet media such as oils,or water colour or ink. The use of colour defines painting. Paintings can be done on canvas, wood other surfaces.
Again, drawing is associated with commercial arts, such as architecture, graphic design, animation, but can also be fine art. Painting, on the other hand, is historically more famous. Both, I guess, can be powerful forms of expression.
2. Do children learn art in school in your country?
Ans: Indeed. Art education is a part of school curriculum in India. It is considered a significant aspect of a child's development, fostering creativity and self-expression. It includes both visual arts, such as drawing and painting, and performing arts , including music, dance, and theater.
Well, the extent and quality of art education can vary widely depending on the school and its resources. For example some schools may have more comprehensive programs than others.
3. What types of art do people in your country like?
Ans: Well, India has a rich cultural heritage with several different forms that people like. For example, as far as painting is concerned, we have Madhubani painting famous in Bihar, Kalamkari paintings, a type of hand-painted cotton textile, Tanjore paintings, famous in South India, and so on.
Each carries the essence of its region and cultural uniqueness and historical importance of those areas.
4. What do young people usually draw in your country?
Ans: Well, I wonder if I know the right answer. I'm not in touch with that topic.
(Instead of sitting and pondering, you may say " excuse me, but I think I'm not in touch with the topic" Mind you, IELTS is not testing your general knowledge; it's a language test. So use good English to express your thoughts - that's what the test aims at. Moreover, if you sit silent and do not answer, the examiner might think that you lack fluency)
Or,
if you are in touch with the topic say something like:
Ans: Well, I guess, the young people in India draw a wide variety of subjects based on their interests, experiences, and influences.
For instance they draw about nature, family and community, festivals and celebrations, and mythology and folklore. Thus, there's a wide range of diversity in what the young people in India draw. Well, I'm not very sure.
5. How can architecture affect people's lives.
Ans: Well, I reckon, architecture has a profound influence on our lives.
For instance, it can guide thoughts, feelings, behaviours and beliefs.
Again, the design of our surroundings can significantly affect our health. For example, hospital patients in darker rooms have been shown to use more painkillers report more stress and higher mortalit rates.
Furthermore, the layout of a space and the material finishes can contribute towards occupant's health, mood and productivity.
6. Which is more important, the architecture or the function of a building?
Ans: Well, it depends.
From a designer's perspective, architecture is crucial as it involves the aesthetic aspect of the building, which includes the style, form, and the ambiance of the structure.
However, from a user's perspective, function is more important. A building must serve its purpose for which it's built, whether it's a home, office, school or any other type of facility. It should provide comfort, safety, and convenience.
NOTE:
In PART 3 Discussion, go on speaking until the interviewer stops you and don't just answer and stop. Display your best English, instead.
In Part 3, it is quite possible that you have to speak about something you have never heard of. If you don't know the subject, tell the examiner soon, so he could ask you another question. Mind you, if you don't tell him and start trying to speak, he might think that it is not a knowledge problem, but a language problem.
