OET Reading Part C assesses your ability to understand the complex  texts on healthcare topics. The questions are designed to test your skills in understanding explicit and implicit meaning.


OET Reading Part C has 6 Different Types of Questions

1. Gist type: Based on Topic Sentence

1.Gist type of Questions:

Gist types of questions focus on the summary of the whole passage; however, the answer can be located in the topic sentence.

Example: 

Q. The writer uses the first paragraph to:

A. encourage people to sleep more

B. stress the importance of sleep

C. give details about test results

D. discuss how we deal with stress

Para 1. Getting too little sleep for several nights in a row disrupts hundreds of genes that are essential for good health, (including those linked to stress and lighting diseases). Tests on people who slept less than six hours a night for a week revealed several  substantial changes in the activity of genes that govern the immune system, metabolism, sleep and wake cycles, and body response to stress, suggesting that poor sleep could have a broad impact on long-term wellbeing. 

Answer. (B)


2. Synonym Based Questions

Q: Scientists are worried that the virus could potentially spread:

A. from pigs to humans

B. to chicken and turkey farms elsewhere

C. to other types of animals

D. to the seaport of Valparaiso

Swine Flu Found in Birds

The last week, the H1N1 virus was found in turkeys in Chile.  The UN now says poultry farms elsewhere in the world could also become infected. Scientists are worried that the virus could theoretically mix with more dangerous strains. It has previously spread from humans to pigs. However, swine flu remains no more severe than seasonal flu.

How to answer

1. Read the question and underline the keywords: scientists, virus & spread.

2. Go to the text read the topic sentence. 

3. Return to the text. 

* The keyword in the title is 'birds

* Identify the keywords in the answer choices.

4. Go to the text and compare the keywords.

* "Scientists" in the question is synonymous to "the UN" in the text.

* "to chicken and turkey farms elsewhere" in answer choice (B) is synonymous to text "poultry farms elsewhere".

* "spread" in the question is synonymous to "infected" in the text.

Therefore, (B) is the answer.

Elimination: Choice (A) says "from pigs to humans", whereas the text says "spread from humans to pigs". They are opposites and can be eliminated.

(C)  "other types of animals" - no reference in the paragraph.

(D) "Valparaiso" - no reference in the the paragraph. 


3. Contrast-word based Questions 


Q: According to Paragraph 3, hemochromatosis occurs due to:

A. an excess of iron in the blood

B. a decrease in  the quantity of iron in the blood

C. a genetic problem

D. alcoholism

Paragraph 3. Hemochromatosis is the most common form iron overload disease.  Primary hemochromatosis, also called, hereditary hemochromatosis, is an inherited disease. Secondary hemochromatosis is caused by anemia, alcoholism, and other disorders. Juvenile hemochromatosis and neonatal hemochromatosis are two additional forms of the disease. Juvenile hemochromatosis leads to severe iron overload and liver and heart disease in adolescents and young adults between the ages of 15 to 30. The neonatal form causes rapid iron build-up in a baby's liver that can lead to death. 


Method: 1.  Read the question and  underline the key word: " due to"

2. Go to the Text, read the topic sentence and mark the key words.

3. Return to the answer choices and identify the key words.

* There you find the contrast words "an excess of iron" and  "decrease...... in iron" , which are opposite words. So, the answer can be (A) or (B). The other two options, C and D can be eliminated.

* " An excess of iron in the blood" in choice (A) is synonymous to      "iron overload" in the text.  So the answer  is (A)

The other choices, B, C & D can be eliminated
