IELTS Writing Task 2, Climate Change

 IELTS Writing Task 2

Agree/Disagree

Task

You have 40 minutes to answer this question.

Some people think that instead of preventing climate change, we need to find a way to live with it. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

You should include reasons for your answers and examples from your knowledge or experience.

Key words:

1. Instead of preventing climate change

2. We need a way to live with it

3. Agree or disagree?

SAMPLE ANSWER

Paragraph 1  Introduction

Climate change is a serious topic of discussion because it affects the lives and well-being of people, animals and plants all over the world; however, it is argued that instead of averting it, we should learn how to accustom to it as they believe climate change is inevitable and irreversible. (Paraphrase) This essay will dwell on my opinion that I totally disagree with the notion and  it requires  urgent  collective action by one and all to mitigate any further spread of the condition (Thesis)

Synonyms:

1. Serious: Grave, severe, critical, alarming, acute

2. Topic: Issue, subject, thesis, theme, matter

3. Affect: Impact, influence, concern, modify

4. Avert: Prevent, block, check, avert, stop, restrain

5. Accustom to: get used to, familiarize, acquaint

Inevitable: Unavoidable, inescapable, certain, inexorable, destined

6. Urgent: Dire, intense, desperate, critical imminent

7. Mitigate: Reduce, alleviate, diminish, lessen, ease

 8. Spread:  Unroll, advance, scatter,  extent

Paragraph 2 BP 1 (Why Disagree)

To embark on, climate change is an alarming threat challenging the very existence of the earth. We should go ahead with all vigour to curtail the emission of greenhouse gas, such as coal, oil and gas, which is the prime cause of changes in climate. (Argument 1)  Rising temperature and the changes in raining patterns will have devastating effects on the earth. (Reason) For instance, the rising of sea levels in the coastal Arabian Sea region is directly attributed to climate change. (Example) Therefore,  we should take all possible measures to prevent any further spread of it.  (Conclusion BP1)

Synonyms:

1. Vigour: Energy, force, dynamism, power, spirit

2. Curtail: Reduce, cut down, diminish,.

3. Devastating: Destructive, disastrous, harmful, injurious, detrimental.

4. Attribute to: Refer to, assign to, allocate to

Paragraph 3 BP 2

Furthermore, the notion that instead of preventing climate change, we should get used to it, arise from ignorance of the severity of the issue or the lack of a scientific temper. There are multiple ways of controlling and preventing the severity of climate change. (Argument 2) Urgent steps must be taken to reduce the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and gas because they are the source of greenhouse gas emission. Moreover,  we must invest in renewable energy for they are clean, cheap and abundant in supply. (Reason) For example, several metros in the world ,including Delhi, depend more on public transport and electric vehicles because transport is a major contributor of greenhouse gas. (Example) It is obvious that climate change can be prevented or at least controlled. (Conclusion BP 2)

Synonym:

1. Severity: Seriousness, Gravity, harshness, rigour, sternness

2. Obvious: Clear, plain, open, visible, evident.

Paragraph 4 Conclusion

To conclude, the argument that we have to live with climate change and not to prevent it lacks logical reasoning. In my opinion, it can be prevented or at least controlled, which is dire need of the hour. (Introduction- re-phrased)

General Discussion

1. Why climate change is a topic of discussion and why should we prevent it?

Climate change is a serious topic of discussion because it affects the lives and well-being of people, animals and plants all over the world. It is a global challenge that requires urgent collective action from governments, businesses, civil society and individuals.

we should prevent climate change because it results in:

* rising temperature, which could cause heat waves, droughts, wildfires and melting of ice and glaciers.

* Changes in raining patterns, which could lead to floods, landslide, water scarcity  and crop failure.

* Rising sea levels affecting coastal communities

2. What can we do to prevent Climate change?

Climate change is a complex and urgent problem that requires global action. There are several solutions and they involve reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving the natural ability of the Earth to absorb carbon dioxide. Some of the solutions are:

* Control the use of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas because they are the source of greenhouse gas emission. Instead we must switch on to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydro and thermal power.

* Invest in renewable energy because they are clean, cheap and abundant in supply.

* Switch to sustainable transport. Transport is a major contributor of greenhouse gas. Instead depend more on public transport and electric vehicles.

* Support climate action by raising awareness, educating ourselves and others, join campaigns, plant more plants and trees which absorb carbon dioxide.

4. Why some people think we should live with it?

Some people believe that climate change is inevitable and irreversible, and any efforts to to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are futile or too costly. Also, a group of people say that climate change is not caused by human activities, but by natural cycles or factors beyond our control.

5. Is it desirable to live with it?

Such arguments are not supported by scientific evidence and studies prove that climate change has been caused mainly by human activities and it can be mitigated by reducing carbon emission. Those arguments are partly ignorance or partly the lack of scientific temper.
