Advantages and Disadvantages


Task

You have 40 minutes for this task. Write at least 250 words.

Nowadays, many offices employ open-space designs instead of separate rooms for work. Do the advantages of this outweighs the disadvantages?

 Include reasons and relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Paragraph 1. Introduction                                   Time: 5 min. Words: 55-60.

Office designs have undergone changes over the time and the one major change is from independent private rooms to open and spacious cubicle for employees. There are multiple benefits for this change; however, they are not free from disadvantages.          (Paraphrase of general statement)This essay will dwell on my opinion that even though there are a few demerits, merits of open space designs are more. (Thesis sentence)

To embark on, open space design is a concept that aims to create a space without walls that separate different functional areas within an environment. It can facilitate regular interaction and communication among colleagues. (Arguments in favour) Moreover, such an environs can increase collaboration, and encourage the staff to share ideas and work together on projects. (Reasons) For example, in Techno Park in Trivandrum,   which houses  hundreds of offices, have every floor one big flat separated into smaller cubicles from where one can interact with the others freely, and at the same time enjoying the private space as well. (Example) Thus, it is a more welcome change, creating a sense of openness and freedom. (Conclusion)

 On the flip side, this type of office designs are not free from limitations. It can increase noise and other distractions, as it exposes workers to various sights and sounds from other areas. (Demerits) Furthermore, it can reduce privacy and security, making workers visible and assessable to others, which compromise to confidentiality (Reasons). For instance, researches revel that such open environs create conflict and dissatisfaction causing tension among workers. (Example) Therefore, open office designs have their own innate, but minor demerits. (Conclusion of BP2)


Paragraph 4 Conclusion

To conclude, open space offices designs are becoming more and more popular these days because of the numerous advantages they have. Despite the few minor negatives, the positives of current model outweigh the its counter part. (Re-written Introduction)

1. How has workplace changed over the time & Why?

Workplace has changed significantly over the years, reflecting the changes in technology, culture, and the way we work. The main trends are:

*Technology: has enabled more automation, innovation, and communication in the workplace. Digital tools such as computers, the internet, e-mail and smart phones have transformed the way we work, making it more productive, connected and flexible. Technology has also created new jobs and opportunities for workers

* Flexibility: has become a key factor of modern workplace, as workers demand more control over their work arrangements, schedules and locations.

* Changing expectations and values of workers, especially younger generations who seek more meaningful, fulfilling and sustainable work

2. Advantages open space designs.

Open space design is a concept that aims to create a space without walls that separate different functional areas within an environment. some of the advantages of this are:

* It can build employee relations, as it facilitates regular interaction and communication among colleagues.

* It can increase collaboration, as it encourages staff to share ideas and work together on projects.

* It can have health benefits, as it allows natural light to follow through a larger space, making it brighter and more welcome. It can also reduce stress and improve mood, as it creates a sense of openness and freedom.

 * It can save budget, as it reduces the need for walls, partitions.

 

3. Disadvantages of open space designs

* It can increase noise and distractions, as it exposes workers to various sounds and sights from other areas.

* It can reduce privacy and security, as it makes workers visible and assessable to others, which compromise to confidentiality.

* It can affect productivity and performance, as it may interfere with workers' concentration, creativity and motivation.

* It can create conflict and dissatisfaction, as it may not suit everyone's performance and personalities, and may cause tension among workers.  

4. Advantages of separate rooms

* Separate rooms provide a quiet and private space for employees to focus on their tasks, avoid distractions, and reduce stress.

* They allow employees to personalize their work environment which can boost their creativity, motivation and comfort 

* They can foster a sense of autonomy and responsibility among employees, as they can manage their own work pace and schedule.
