PART 3 Discussion. Sample answers
1. What is better, sending text messages or voice messages?
Ans: Well, I guess, that depends on your purpose, context, target audience.
On the one hand, texting is convenient and quick. The recipients can read the message when they have a few moments to spare. I feel it's better for one-way communication where you don't necessarily need a response, For instance, appointment reminder or general announcements.
On the other hand, voice messages convey feelings better than the other because they provide a rich sense of emotion and connection. I believe that voice messages are more private than text ones; however, everyone may not appreciate them or they may go unnoticed.
2. Why do some people dislike sending text messages?
Ans: Well, it's true that some people dislike sending voice message.
I think it's because some people want to avoid the effort of typing; it takes time. Moreover, constant texting can strain your thumbs and wrists. Again, for those who cherish personal interactions, text messages may feel impersonal.
3. How has interpersonal communication changed over the time?
Ans: Well, that's an interesting question. During my grandparents' time, communication was mainly face-to-face or written.
However, technology changed everything dramatically, especially the long distance communication.
Today, the internet connects the enabling instant messaging, e-mails and video calls. Mobile phones made communication portable and ubiquitous. Moreover, WhatsApp, Telegram, emojis and Mems brought about a revolution in interpersonal communication.
4. While texting, some people use sms language. In your opinion, what are the merits and demerits of using sms language while texting?
Ans: Well, SMS language allows for shorter messages, saving time and effort. It's a quick communication, especially when you need to convey information properly. SMS language feels less formal, making conversations more relaxed and they are ideal for friendly chats, informal updates, or casual interactions.
On the other hand, overuse of abbreviations can make messages unclear and the recipient may struggle to decipher the intended meaning.
Moreover, in formal settings SMS language may appear unprofessional. For example, you can't send an SMS message to your professor.
More seriously, too much dependence on SMS may hinder one's vocab and even grammar.
5. What, in your opinion, are the negative influence of technology on communication?
Ans: Technology has significantly impacted communication, and while it brings several benefits, there are also negative effects to consider:
Obviously, cell phones and mobile devices allow constant connectivity. However, they can be dangerous distractions, especially while driving. Texting and cell phone use contribute to accidents.
Technology creates the advantage of elaborate online social networks. Without any doubt, these networks sometimes replace strong real-world connections with shallow online ones. The users may have several 'friends', but lack true companionship.
Therefore, in my opinion balancing digital interactions with the real-world connections is crucial for our well-being.
