( DENMARK, 23 February 2024)
1. Do you think that children can learn a language faster than adults?
Ans: Yes, children can learn languages more effortlessly than adults, because early in development, most of the language acquisition happens spontaneously, through passive listening. They learn languages through an unconscious system. Moreover, passive exposure without awareness as to what they are learning helps them to learn a language faster
2. Why do adults find it harder to learn a new language?
Ans: Adults have superior cognitive function, which is a drawback in learning a new language. They learn a language through a conscious mechanism, whereas children learn it unconsciously. Adults focus more on sentence structure and grammar, whereas children do dot care for them.
3. Do you think the country should protect the language of the minority population?
Ans: Well, it's generally considered important to protect the language of the minority population because it is a human rights obligation. It can prevent tensions and conflicts. Moreover, protecting minority languages contributes to the construction of equal, politically and socially stable societies. For instance, the Manipur problem can be effectively solved if the languages of the fighting minorities are protected.
4. What methods schools can adopt to making learning languages easier?
Ans: I think, there are several methods schools can adopt to make language learning effortless.
* Firstly, surround students with the language they are learning. This could be through language-immersion experiences, watching foreign-language films, or striking up conversations with native speakers.
* Secondly, encourage a love of language at an early age. This prepares students well for school and life.
* Another way is to encourage students to use newly acquired words and language rules in their daily life, such as during play or communication with peers.
5. Are schools in your country teaching any foreign languages?
Ans: Well, apart from English, there are several schools where French and German are taught; however, it's not mandatory to learn any foreign languages. For instance, Bemax Public School (BPS) in Kerala, proposes to include French, Spanish or German mandatory in its syllabus.
6. Is there a connection between the country's culture and it's language?
Ans: Well, without any doubt, there is a strong connection between a country's culture and its language, because the language reflects the values and beliefs of a culture. For instance, common expressions and idioms can give us a glimpse into what a society deems important. Moreover, language and culture are interlinked, and understanding one helps in understanding the other.
However, in the post-globalized world, every student must know at least one major language of the world to understand and appreciate the culture of that country. That's why Bemax Publish School (BPS) has made Spanish, French or German mandatory in its syllabus.
