Part 3 Discussion. Possible answers:

1. Do you think the dishes that people used to make in the past are the same as the dishes they make now?

Ans: The dishes people make has evolved significantly over time due to a variety of factors:

* Cooking methods: The cooking has evolved from primitive techniques like using firewood, to advanced cooking methods we use today.

* Ingredients: used in dishes have also changed over tome.

* Food processing: Food processing is a modern invention, which can release more energy (calories) that might otherwise be inaccessible in the raw products.

* Evolution of ingredients and Nutrition:  New ingredients, technologies, agriculture, science as well as historical events, such as wars and epidemics, have hugely changed the food landscape in the last century.

Thus, while some traditional dishes may still be prepared today, the methods, ingredients, and even the taste can be quite different from their original versions due to these evolutions. Its a fascinating journey through culinary history.

2. Why do you think some people spend so much money on dishes for celebrations?

Ans: There are several reasons why people might spend a significant amount on food and dishes for celebrations.

* Expression of appreciation: Delicious food, striking decorations, and impressive entertainment are seen as expressions of appreciation for the family. These are opportunities for well-off families to show off by pouring money into an extensive menu with sumptuous delicacies.

* social bonding: Food is an integral part of the atmosphere at any social events. It's a regular occurrence to watch some sporting event  while sipping on a drink.  Coffee or tea is the most popular excuse to invite someone.

* Relief from stress: Many stressed workers find this gateway during celebrations and parties.

Thus, while these reasons justify the spending for some, others may see it as an extravagance.

3. Do you think traditional dishes will be replaced by other dishes?

Ans: The evolution of traditional dishes is a complex process influenced by multiple factors, including cultural exchange, availability of ingredients, and advancements in cooking techniques.

So, while traditional dishes may evolve or new ones may emerge, it's unlikely that traditional  dishes will be completely replaced. They may simply transform and adapt to the changing times.

4. Do you think dishes are important in celebrations?

Ans: Well, I reckon, dishes are indeed important in celebrations. Food is not just about nourishment, it's also about culture, tradition, and community. It helps in increasing social bonding, expressing tradition and creating a sense of community.

5. How do you think global food trends influence local traditions in your country?

Ans: Global food trends can influence local food tradition in various ways.

* Adoption of global ingredients: new ingredients can be used to different local cuisines, for example making 'dosa' in olive oil.

* Influence of international cuisines: As people travel and experience different cuisines, they bring back ideas that can influence their local food culture.

So, while global food trends are shaping the culinary landscape, they are fostering a renewed application for local food traditions.

6. In what ways do you think food plays a role in cultural identity?

Ans: Food plays a significant role in cultural identity in various ways:

* Expression of heritage: Food is a way of expressing oneself, connecting with others and passing on rich cultural heritage. It represents our history and values.

* Social bonding: In various cultures worldwide, sharing meals is seen as a way to strengthen social bonds and create a sense of belonging.

* Cultural distinction: Each culture has unique culinary traditions that reflect its history, geography, climate religion and social customs. These traditions help distinguish one culture from another.
