OET Writing - Assessment Criteria

 

1. Purpose (3 marks)

    * Why you are writing this letter

     * Included in the introduction of the letter 

2. Content ( 7 Marks)

   * What information does the reader need to know

     (Relevant )

   * Select information keeping in mind the reader and

      purpose. 

3. Conciseness and Clarity (7 Marks)

   * Leave all irrelevant information that the reader neednot know

   * Summarize the information

   * Do not use complicated language

[Sample 1.

Mrs Parker presented on 07/10/2023. She complained of frequent symptoms of productive cough that began 3 days ago. The productive cough was also accompanied by fatigue and fever. The physical examination was done in which her vital signs were recorded as normal. Scattered rhonchi were heard over lung field. All the symptoms wew associated with a case of acute bronchitis. Amoxicillin 500 t.d.s. was given and she was asked to come back after 2 days for review.

Sample 2. 

Initially, on 07/10/2023, Mrs Parker presented with a three-day history of productive cough, fever, and fatigue. The  examination  revealed scattered rhonchi over the lung field, on which assessment of of acute bronchitis was made. Therefore, she was prescribed Amoxicillin 500 mg twice a day and was advised to return for a review after two days.

Sample 2 has conciseness and clarity because:

 * Varied use of punctuation and sentence structure

  * Uses linking words

  * No redundant words

 * Not verbose] 

 4. Organisation and Layout ( 7 Marks)

  * Plan very well before start writing

  * Divide information logically in paragraphs. 

  * Do not use templates

  * Order the the information suitable for the reader

  * Present the letter in apt layout 

5 Genre and Style (7 Marks)

  * Maintain a polite and formal tone

  * Avoid the language of judgment or feelings

  * use the medical terms appropriately

6. Language ( 7 Marks)

  * Use appropriate vocabulary

  * Avoid spelling errors

  * Punctuate sentences correctly

  * Legibility counts

  * Use passive voice  where relevant


Negative Marks:

* Grammar errors

* Spelling  errors

* Punctuation errors and

* Illegibility
