SETTING: Paediatrics Ward

DOCTOR: Your patient is a 7-year-old girl called Flora. She has had tonsillectomy this morning without complications. She is due for discharge later this evening. Her father is concerned about the speed at which she is set to leave the hospital for she is still in pain, has a slight fever, and is not very alert. She has had a little to drink and has eaten some ice cream. She has been prescribed paracetamol for pain and fever. Full recovery is expected to take  around 2weeks.

TASK

*  Reassure the father that the tonsillectomy was carried out without any complications. and that it is normal for a child to leave on the day of the operation (or the next day if the child is not eating properly).

* Enquire weather the patient has had anything further to eat or drink.

* Explain the importance of encouraging the patient to eat as normally as possible even though it may be painful.

* Discuss post-operative recovery (e.g., the patient could get worse over the next 4 days and the patient may experience ear-ache, the patient should be encouraged to brushed their teeth; the patient is to rest and stay off school away from other children for two weeks).
