SETTING: Healthcare Clinic

DOCTOR: Your patient is a 45-year-old IT professional who recently got divorced. He is stressed and wishes to have a holiday to restore energy and spirit. However, the company boss has refused his refused his request for the vacation leave. Your patient has come to see you today to request a medical certificate  that will allow him to have two weeks off work.

TASK

* Ask what exactly the patient has come for

* Refuse to issue a medical certificate as your patient not depressed.

* Convey that issuing a deliberately false or misleading certificate represents professional misconduct.

* Emphasise that misuse of sick leave is a serious matter (e.g., going on vacation while pretending to be sick might have consequences. Boss can question the medical certificate).

* Acknowledge that stress affects health and convince him to see a psychologist for stress management. (Emphasizing the long term benefits of the therapy)
