 Two-way Question

Traffic on roads has become a problem in nearly every country, What can be done to reduce the amount of traffic at a society level? What could individuals do to help?

The exponential growth in the number of vehicles has resulted in acute traffic problems in all major cities around the globe. The mounting dependence on private vehicles, especially on cars, has led to nearly all families owning more than one car. Even though it is not easy to find out an amicable solution rapidly, by the effective intervention of the governments, NGOs and individuals themselves, the amount of traffic can be curtailed to a great extent.

To embark on, multiple reforms could be introduced with the encouraging support of the governments this problem could be tackled at the society level. Firstly, road tax and fuel price can be raised along with the simultaneous improvement in the public transportation. Secondly, the number of parking slots should be reduced and the parking fee could be hiked substantially, which would naturally encourage citizens to shift to public transportation mode. A premier example is the step taken by the authorities in Japan, where the government offers tax breaks to those who show willingness to shift to public transport. Thus, by the joint effort of everyone, the alarming situation can be addressed in the society level.

Furthermore, individuals can contribute sufficiently to curtail the growing menace of traffic problems in urban areas. Public awareness programs can be initiated by making the best use of social medias, which would impart a sense of  civic responsibility in the mind of the individuals, making them to depend more and more on public transport. For example the constant reminder of the Chief Minister of UP, in India, through e-media enabled a large section of the individuals to resort to public transport. Therefore,  individuals can bring about no small contribution in alleviating traffic problems in cities. 

To conclude, only when the individuals become aware, can any social reforms function properly. When more and more people show willingness to resort to public transport, the traffic problems looming large can be solve to a great extent.
